Berhampur Station Set for ₹182-Crore World-Class Makeover

The East Coast Railway has issued a tender for the first phase of the redevelopment of Berhampur railway station in Odisha, with the project estimated at ₹182.57 crore. The initiative forms part of a broader modernization programme aimed at transforming the station into a world-class transport hub.

Earlier this year, Indian Railways approved approximately ₹300 crore for the station’s comprehensive redevelopment. Located on the strategically important Howrah–Chennai main line, Berhampur railway station is set to undergo a significant infrastructure upgrade to enhance passenger amenities, operational efficiency, and future capacity.

The redevelopment plan includes the construction of three additional railway lines and four new platforms, along with a spacious air concourse designed to improve passenger movement. Other proposed facilities include a quick watering system for trains, escalators, lifts, modern passenger amenities, and advanced surveillance systems to strengthen safety and security.

According to railway officials, the first phase of the project will be implemented under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model and is expected to be completed within 20 months from the date of award.

Berhampur railway station currently serves as a key rail hub in southern Odisha, handling more than 162 trains and catering to approximately 25,000 passengers daily, with connectivity to major cities across the country.

The Southern Odisha Joint Railway Development Action Committee welcomed the tender announcement and thanked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the long-awaited redevelopment proposal. Committee representatives expressed confidence that the project would be executed within the stipulated timeline.

The committee has also renewed its demand for additional railway infrastructure projects in the region, including the establishment of a coaching depot at Golanthara near Berhampur and the development of new rail corridors connecting Berhampur–Rairakhol, Gopalpur–Rayagada, and Gopalpur–Talcher to improve connectivity and support regional economic growth.
